



Mission
The African American Arts Alliance of Chicago is a nonprofit service organization dedicated
to the support and promotion of the performing, visual, literary and design arts. The Alliance
seeks to increase interaction, communication and collaboration within the Black Arts
community in order to promote the further development of organizations and individual artists,
while perpetuating a positive image of our membership.
Background
In 1973 Playwright Useni Perkins founded the Black Theatre Alliance, this organization
instilled the value of community collaboration as a means of achieving collective success. In
1997 a group of Chicago’s leading African American artists and arts organization came
together and formed a new Organization; incorporating as The African American Arts
Alliance of Chicago. This organization embraced the history of the Black Theatre Alliance
while expanding their scope to include all diverse group of artistic mediums. The Alliance was
formulated as a service organization to address the specific needs and concerns of Chicago’s
African American arts community.
Services
The African American Arts Alliance of Chicago provides the following services for arts
organizations and individual artists:
- Various workshops themed on organizational development. Our workshops afford
knowledge and skill to enable organizations grow and develop, and to address capacity-
building issues.
- One-on-one contact program designed to connect organizations and individual artists with
professionals in the field who offer advisement on specific topics, e.g., audience growth and
marketing.
- Black Arts Month (every October) provides an opportunity for organizations and individual
artists to showcase talents and artistic expression.
- Organizations gain further web exposure and visibility via our web presence.
- The Alliance organizes and distributes a bi-monthly community events calendar to grow
networking connections and cross-discipline awareness within the Black Arts community.
